A gloomy day here but trying this effect out the kitchen window and adjusting brightness/contrast made it look a lot better. This is a fun tut and I look forward to playing with it over the next two weeks.

Here's my attempt using a photo from Eger in Hungary. Because of the tower I had to create a shaped mask to keep the entire building in focus, otherwise the bell tower was out of focus and the base in focus or vuice versa. The contrast/brightness tip made a big difference, as did a bity more saturation. Happy to take any advice/criticism on board

I really like this one, Tom! Here's my first attempt. Photo taken along Interstate 40 West in Oklahoma. I added the saturation you suggested and it looks kinda surreal to me!

I was thinking some subjects were going to require some extra work editing the mask, and you accomplished it quite well. I would appreciate learning how you went about that bit.

I added the saturation you suggested and it looks kinda surreal to me! The sky and clouds are especially attractive to my eye VickiD . It looks like a sky from a Hayao Miyazaki movie.

It looks like a sky from a Hayao Miyazaki movie. I absolutely love his movies, Tom...especially Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro!!!

Two of my absolute favorites! Totoro is so special. Let's not forget Howl's Moving Castle and Kiki's Delivery Service.

Thanks for the challenge Tom. The old house photographed with a drone and turbines photographed from a small airplane.

Now I've had few practice runs I've used FX pencil sketch, blend mode soft light and slightly darken the blur.

Trying another one - I thought I had a train image I could use but couldn't find it so this one started from an image by Adam Gavlák on Unsplash . Tony

Really, really nice effect Tony! I remembered there were these little pills that you could use with some model locomotives to make "smoke".

Many thanks. It was really just a slow and steady selection, initially using quick selection tool followed by trial and error adjustments to include/exclude areas around the building until it looked right. Some parts are not quite right, like the leaves on the right side - I couldn't decide whether they ought to be blurred or not and by then the selection was getting a bit fiddly and time-consuming. I then applied Gaussian blur as suggested, again with trial and error to get the right amount. A lot more luck more than judgement!

I like this little challenge so thought I'd try another but on this one I confess to cheating - rather than create the effect as explained I used Nik to do it. I was curious to see how results compared - manual vs automatic - and I think Nik did a decent job although maybe not the best photo to use as I had to use a diagonal.
