This is a random thing. Sometimes the layer images do not show up in the layers panel. Usually they do but not always. What am I doing wrong? Is there are setting to prevent this? These second image shows it working okay. I saved the PSD and re-opened it and all is good. Thanks!

Clive, You could try deleting/restoring the Elements Preferences file. According to the Help file, . . . See if it will work for you. Go to Edit > Preferences > General. Click on the "Reset Preferences on next launch" button. Ignore the "This cannot be undone." warning and click OK. Close Elements and then start it again.

You could try deleting/restoring the Elements Preferences file. Thank you Sepiana. I will give that a try.

I have been having this problem for about two years now. It is really annoying! I think it links to some of the filters I use.

I am reposting this as this problem is driving crazy. Since I have reinstalled Photoshop 2023 on my new laptop, the thumbnails in my layers are going blank. They are still there, but show up as a blank (no pixels) layer. ...and it is happening with every image I work on.
Does anyone know how to solve this? Is this a problem that should be reported to Adobe?

Since I have reinstalled Photoshop 2023 on my new laptop, the thumbnails in my layers are going blank. They are still there, but show up as a blank (no pixels) layer. ... Pat, I also have PSE 2023 (on two computers). I have not encountered this problem. You mentioned earlier in this thread . . . I think it links to some of the filters I use. Are these Elements built-in filters or 3rd-party ones? If they are built-in filters, . . . You could try deleting/restoring the Preferences file. If this doesn't solve the problem, you could try running Elements as administrator. It seems to fix many glitches Elements develop. 1. Right-click on the Elements shortcut and select "Run as administrator". 2. Do some testing of the Layers panel. 3. If the problem went away, close Elements. 4. Open Elements again but this time do it from your standard user account. If they are 3rd-party filters, you may have to take the problem to their creators (Topaz, etc.).

You may want to look into this setting, as it is possible that your computer is running out of resources from time to time on the video display. I have not run into this issue using an M1 Mac as my Memory is available as GPU or CPU. Just a just does anything happen to the icon when you click on the layer?

Did you try working with these options? Janice, Thanks for suggesting this troubleshooting variable! I tested it on two copies of PSE 2023. It doesn't cause the problem pontiac1940 and srmoment are having. They are getting "blank" thumbnails.

I saved the PSD and re-opened it and all is good. I could not get the problem to happen this morning. I opened PSD layered files and the thumbnails all appeared. But as noted, when this has happened I can save and close the PSD file, re=open it and the thumbnails show. Did you try working with these options? Yes, I changed thumbnails settings some weeks ago. it is possible that your computer is running out of resources from time to time on the video display. That is possible as I only have 16GB of RAM. I will look a this when it happens again. Thanks to all. srmoment .. Pat, is this a random happening with you? i.e., usually it's okay, but sometimes not?

I have PSE 2023 on two computers, both with the same amount of RAM you have -- 16GB. I don't have any problems with the layer thumbnails. You could try assigning more RAM to PSE. It may help! See . . . When Elements Goes into a Sluggish Mode.

It is a new thing with 2023. Odd that srmoment and I both experience it. But not always. Maybe a NAFTA thing. (Joke.) My PSE does get sluggish so I will check out that link. Thanks Sepiana.
