A day late but I've been away so going to keep this months B&W Challenge simple! I ran into this quote the other day: So I thought Simplicity might be a good theme and another definition of Simplicity in Photography I ran across is: So here's my single subject with no distractions in B&W which just happens to be a loon which is naturally black and white but feel free to interpret "Simplicity" in any way you choose. Good theme Tony. Thanks. Keeping your "critter" idea going with a mule deer and snow goose.

A crop from a recent sunflower image and the light post from while I was out today. Not sure if the sunflower works or not for the topic.

Excellent start - critters always make good subjects and the sunflower certainly fits the theme. It reminded me of an image I recently saw of an icicle which was also done for the theme of Simplicity as does the snow drift.

I am killing time waiting for a huge aurora event. It is windy and cloudy atm. Fingers crossed.

Love your sunflower, hmca. Perfect use of b&w I think, the tonality is excellent.

Spider thinks it's simplicity though in the 2nd pic it's got more fulfilment..

I appreciate the comments on the sunflower. While I liked the picture, my concern was that it might have too much detail to be considered "Simplistic".

I did wonder with mine, Helen, so I thought I'd just join in the fun 😁

Thanks Tony. This is great fun. I am killing time waiting for a huge aurora event. It is windy and cloudy atm. Fingers crossed. I made a mess of the quotes but was trying to ask what this image started life as - whatever it was it's very effective for the theme. And did you get to see the aurora last night? Tony

I did wonder with mine, Helen, so I thought I'd just join in the fun 😁 Simplicity is entirely flexible - and joining in the fun is the main thing! Must admit I prefer the single spider web - works really well in black and white. Tony

I made a mess of the quotes but was trying to ask what this image started life as - whatever it was it's very effective for the theme. And did you get to see the aurora last night? Thanks Tony. The much-hyped aurora never happened. Tonight perhaps. This is the original photo. I went to a park in Lethbridge on the afternoon of January 18, 2024. It was about -20°C. About 10 cm of fluffy snow fell overnight and there had been no wind. The snow in the photo was atop large boulders along the shoreline. The 2 PM sun was lowish and the shadows created interesting forms. You could say this is a photo of shadows. Glad I saw the effects and took a lot of photos.
This is the raw file with zero adjustments. It was underexposed on purpose so the whites were not blown out.

Thank you Tony for this fun challenge. Here is my take. Twisted tree bark on a rock. Kind regards Chris
