B&W Challenge No. 88 - Hanging or attached It is the first Thursday of the month ... time for the month's B&W challenge. The black and white challenge theme for November, 2024 is "Hanging or attached." I am looking for photos of anything man-made that is hanging or attached to an inside or outside wall, fence, door or window. Metal or pottery art, bird feeders, door or fence decorations or ornaments, posters or signs that are not commercials or ads. Keywords are hanging or affixed. So, please no wall murals or graffiti painted on walls, etc. And please no store or commercial signs, ads or traffic signs. My examples were processed in ACR with adjustments to levels and contrast. They were all desaturated in ACR. Most were then adjusted in PSE using the Gradient Map Adjustment layer (with B & W set as the foreground and background "colors") to do minor level tweaks to B, W and grays as needed ... to my eye. The boundaries for this challenge are generous and I expect we will see a range of subjects. I look forward to your photos of things attached to walls, fences or windows. Thank you. I am pushing the boundaries with this image. Both the little boy and the bungee cords are man made and the boy is hanging from the bungee cord. If you feel the image is not acceptable, please delete it. Seen at a recent event. Silver Efex Pro was used to convert to b&w, high contrast preset.

Both the little boy and the bungee cords are man made and the boy is hanging from the bungee cord. Good for me, Pete. Certainly the cords ate manmade and hanging. I posted a bird feeder containing a bird. Same concept. I really like how you presented this photo. Thanks Pete.

Thanks Clive The original in color was difficult to separate the boy from the background. When I tried this in B&W, the background was no longer an issue. Thanks again Pete

When I tried this in B&W, the background was no longer an issue. It worked well. This is almost spooky >>> Literally, two minutes ago I closed a photo of an old fishing friend who passed three days ago. His wife wants photos for a memorial. I converted his photo to B&W because the color did not work in part because of the background.

Unusual topic, Clive. I was pleasantly surprised to find some that would work in my archives.....and seeing Pete's I am reminded of another one that I will add later in the week. Taken at the House of Refuge in Hutchinson Island Fla. in 2017. Converted to B/W using SE 6. And then I found this one..... also converted with Nik SE.

The topic suits my style ... unusual. It is a bit odd, but we all have (and see) things that hang or are attached. They are everywhere. Thanks for you submissions. Nice photos. I like the old oval mirror. The shadows behind the hanging papier-mâché (?) dress and crown add depth.

PeteB Great shot, I love how you have isolated the little boy and created a sense of movement. Is it in camera DoF or have you applied a blur filter/effect? Either way it works incredibly well. The high contrast Nik is perfect in this one I reckon

The high contrast Nik is perfect in this one I reckon Thanks Howard The isolation was done in post. In the color version I used Nik’s Analog Efex (Bokeh adjustment) to blur the background. I also applied poster edges to the young boy. In Silver Efex, the High Contrast choice and the vignette added to the effect. Also, I may have added a red filter. Thanks for commenting.

Fun theme to strategize for ... thanks Clive! Headed down the street this morning to where I know one my neighbors has this on his fence. (Not sure if it's an art piece or a gentle nudge toward the neighborhood dogs to keep moving along.) B/W in camera, contrast boost in ACR. Fuji X-T10, Lensbaby sweet 35.

From this mornings walk - a Wood Duck nesting box close to the lake. This is one of several in the area and the only one where I have actually seen a wood duck emerging. Most of the time it is inhabited by squirrels and sure enough a black one popped out and shot up the tree while I was lining up the camera. Converted in Camera Raw using a B&W preset. Tony

Fun theme to strategize for ... thanks Clive! Thanks, Bill. Fun photo and comments. a Wood Duck nesting box close to the lake. Thanks, Tony. Nice opportunity. Wood ducks are intermittently around Lethbridge and I photographed one across the road in spring 2023. I've not seen wood ducks nests being used by them.

We have this great horned owl intarsia hanging on the wall - wasn't sure how well it would work in black and white as it is made up of many different types of wood which give it its colour but gave it a try in Silver Efex 6 and quite pleased with the result. The wall is a creamy colour and I changed it to white to make the wall hanging contrast better. Tony
