Thank you Sue for the information. When I try to use system restore my computer locks up. I think I'll do a fresh install in a couple of days after I get all my stuff backed up.

I can't believe there are no restore points. Isn't it done automatically? When I was on a PC, I used system restore many times to get me out of jams and I don't remember having difficulty going as far back as I wanted - maybe I wasn't able to choose a specific date, but I could find some date that would work.

I previously had a PC but now use MAC but I do help out friends with PC's. Download these 2 free programs - Malware Bytes and Super AntiSpyware Turn off your main antivirus protection program. Go into system restore and turn it OFF. This will delete all of system restore points if you have any.
Run MalwareBytes on full scan and remove what may come up. Run Super AntiSpyware on full scan also. Remove whatever comes up.
If you still have problems run both programs again this time in SafeMode. You can also download another free program CCleaner. Unless you know what you're doing in this last program, make sure to uncheck registry files. Have it remove all temp files etc.
When computer comes up clean turn your System Restore back on. The reason to turn it off in the beginning was to remove all restore points incase they were loaded with spyware and/or malware. You would't want to, in the future, use one of these restore points which would infect your system again. Turn on Main Antivirus Program and make sure it is updated with the latest dat files.

I would suggest Malwarebytes.org , as the techie I get any work done by tells me malware is a bigger concern today than viruses, and he claims Malwarebytes is better than most! Since loading it, I find this program is picking up and quarantining stuff on a daily basis.

Marianne, thanks for that info on time machine. I don't need it now, but it's good to know.
My original comments were about system restore on a PC. I was wondering why the OP couldn't find an older restore point. My experience when I used a PC, was that I was always able to go as far back to restore as I wanted. Maybe, I had it set up from day one to set restore points.
However, I have no experience using system restore when malware or a virus is responsible for your problem. Then, I'm guessing you can't go back to resolve the problem.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Sepiana thanks for the link you supplied, but I didn't have a clue what they were taking about. I don't know how to do any of that stuff. Unfortunately I can't install anything either. I have been busy with other projects so I haven't taken the time to do a clean install. Thanks again.

If you an open a cmd window with administrator privileges try "SFC /scannow. " is will scan all system files for corruption an attempt a repair. If it can't correct the errors I'll give you the second part to it that may.

Mike, Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Accessories. Right-click Command prompt, and then click Run as administrator. Then proceed as Steven suggests. Bayla
