I can't remember all the particulars, but I do remember that the E7 was not compatible with the necessary ACR update to accommodate our RAW files.
I believe the latest ACR update compatible with Elements 7 is ACR 4.5. (This is what my copy of Elements 7 shows.). You cannot update it to ACR 6.4 (which you said you needed to open your camera's Raw files). This explains the compatibility issue you had.
You had two basic options.
- Purchase the latest version of Elements which would support your camera. - Use the free Adobe DNG Converter.

Thanks, michelb, for the always informative explanations. Regarding your final sentence, "The exported files can be very small in size even for viewing on HD TVs.", what long-side pixel dimension have you found to be the minimum for full-size viewing on a decent-sized wide-screen TV (I think the one we have is 46") You also made mention of sidecar files; while I can appreciate the reason for programs utilizing sidecar instructions, I am a bit weird in that I just can't learn to like them. The only meaningful dimension for the digital image is the pixels dimension, in my case 1920 x 1080 (2k ) is very good. If you are looking from some distance, 46" should be comfortable. Sidecar files: After all, whether you like them or not, they do work. If I am writing many tags to many big raw files (32k for my Fuji) that's much quicker than writing them in the metadata header of 7 k jpeg files... As a side note, you can avoid sidecar files by using a database instead. See: forums.adobe.com/thread/1467842I did not get any answer. My guess is that nobody uses the database and that people are happy enough with the xmp files.

I cannot get my PSE 9 to edit a jpeg image using ACR. Nothing happens ? Is there something that needs to be checked in the preferences menu ?
I followed these steps from an earlier post in this topic :
You don’t need Elements+ to open a .jpeg file in the Raw Converter. Photoshop Elements is quite capable of doing it.
In Elements 7 -- Go to File>Open As . . . Camera Raw In Elements 12 -- Go to File>Open in Camera Raw
As to the "Done" and "Save Image" buttons in the Raw Converter . . . Done = Apply changes and dismiss dialog without opening image. Open Image = Apply changes and open image. Alt-click to open image without updating image metadata.
Thanks as always for the help and guidance.

zman, I am not sure I understand your post. Would you be kind enough to clarify it? Those instructions don't work for you? Thanks!

Hi zman , I think the first thing we should do is verify that you ACR installed. In the PSE 9 editor, click Help and then click About Plugin in the drop down menu. If you see Camera Raw in the menu, click that and note which version you have. What did it say?

ACR comes with Elements; it is not a third-party plug-in which needs to be installed. I can see this happening if zman, for whatever reason, navigated the path below and deleted the CameraRaw.8bi file.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 9.0\File Formats>CameraRaw.8bi
I tracked down one of his previous threads. It seems to indicate he has ACR in his copy of Elements.

Hi again,
Checked and I do have ACR Ver 6.5.0.216
In PSE9 Organizer I select a jpeg image to "Fix - full photo edit. The image appears in the Editor. I then select click "File" > "Open As" and select my image filename and "Open As" Camera Raw and click "Open".
The ACR does not activate and nothing happens as far as the ability to use ACR for editing.

zman, thanks for the prompt reply! Now I see what is happening. Don't take your photo from the Organizer to the Editor. You need to bring your photo directly into the Editor.
You can find detailed information on how to open a .jpeg file in ACR in Elements 9 in the document below. See the section for Elements 11 and earlier versions.
