Another easy way to find the point of greatest effect on your filter it to look at your computer screen through it, then turn it until the screen goes completely black. Then you can mark the point at 12 o'clock. That mark then is what you point to the sun. I had never seen this information before. When looking at the screen, I am assuming the CPL needs be on the camera, or are you just holding the CPL in your hand ? I would assume that it would be best to kill all other lights in the room so that they would not alter the true effect, right ? Thanks for posting.

No, you can just hold it with your fingers and turn it. And the lights don't have to be out. Consider that when you are using a CP you're usually outside in bright sun.
