It's the fear of the unknown There may or may not be bugs that affect how well you can use it. For instance in the current release I couldn't get the Start Screen to pop-up without a re-boot or two (in fact I've just turned on my Win10 machine and it wont let me use Start again). Also trying to connect to the router wasn't straight forward and required much plug and play. Some folks are reporting endless re-boot cycles. Now hopefully all these will be fixed before release but some may fall through the cracks and affect something you want to do. You then have to wait for a fix and then download an update which may then break other things. Pays your money and takes your choice.....oh I forgot it's free Colin

.... - if you upgrade to the Windows 10 Home versions then future updates issued by MS will be installed automatically. Currently you can set your PC to install them or not - now you have no choice. I don't mind this so much for my PC but, for my laptop and tablet, it could well pose a problem. For example, when out and about, connect to wifi somewhere, either at someone's house, at a meeting etc, I might be in a position to be wanting to conserve battery power (a long session, perhaps) then an update starts up and maybe means I can't switch off or proceed with what I was doing etc. Updates can be at the most inconvenient times, which I know from being caught out before. It does sound rather absurd that this will not be controllable. I think there will be a lot of people who have issues with this, surely? It is a concern to me at the moment. What thoughts does everyone have in this respect? Colin? Anyone? Julie

I guess we really need to wait and see what's in the released version because I think this one is contentious. Not just from the power point of view but possibly also on a capped broadband service or metered broadband connection eg Smartphone.... in which case you could be billed for the extra bytes downloaded.
Possibly another case for waiting for the dust to settle before installing.
Even Google Android notifies you of updates but its up to you to do them or not.

I went ahead and did the "Reservation Thing" so to speak and got email confirmation that it would be downloaded automatically when released but I would determine when to install it, Do you think this action procedure of downloading without installing would upset the apple cart? Oh by the way,I did this on my wife's computer you didn't think I would risk anything on mine,,,,,, do you? dick

Downloading without installing is fine but what you'll get is an early release which may (or may not) be buggy. Still, since you don't have to install it straight away you can watch out for any service packs or updates that MS may release that fix some specific issues and then do the install followed immediately by the update. You have a year in which to do the install.

Do you think it possible that following the early release download by MS that they could or would continue to do upgrade's on top of the uninstalled early release or if that is even possible. I sure don't know just thinking............

Dick,
This is just my opinion (instigated by my fear of the unknown).
I don't see the need to hurry and reserve Windows 10, download and not install it, etc., etc. Microsoft is giving us plenty of time to make up our minds concerning upgrading to Windows 10 free of charge -- one year from July 29. Why not wait until the official release of Windows 10? Then, check the reviews, the feedback/bug reports in the MS Community forums, etc.? In this way, you will be able to make an informed decision.

Sepiana. Like I said it's on my wife's machine,I ain't skeeeeeeeeered. I'm going to let the cards fall where they may and see. I don't plan on installing anything until some favorable reports hit the airways. Somebody has to climb the mountain why not a dummy like me.

I will be eager to move to Windows 10 as I have 8.1 installed and find it absolutely dreadful compared to the previous version I was using (Win 7).

You haven't said what you dislike about 8.1 so you may be equally disappointed with 10 since it builds on the 8.1 theme.
What is it about 8.1 that you don't like?

Dick....
I doubt they will upgrade an uninstalled version as they tend to be incremental changes rather than a complete new build.

I sure don't know just thinking......... I don't think that is an option. I also think that in the past, Microsoft has required pre-release version to be completely overwritten by the final production version.

Never an Early Adopter be For Updates often dull the edge of harmony. This above all: to thine OS be true, And it must follow as the night the day, Thou canst not then be made a Beta Tester and unpaid.
