Funny - as I stare at these, the cutouts go from cut out to on top - optical illusions, I guess I think careful attention to the drop shadow details can help avoid that illusion. Also using an “under” layer that has details may help too.

I think careful attention to the drop shadow details I have just given up on my latest attempt at this effect. I have been trying to achieve the look of depth that you have created in your example image. Hoping you can offer some suggestions. Will give it another try tomorrow.

Think this may be better...... I have a feeling that creating the shadow may be one of those things that's easier in PE than PS.......or at least it makes me feel better if I tell myself that!

I have a feeling that creating the shadow may be one of those things that's easier in PE than PS.......or at least it makes me feel better if I tell myself that! You could well be on to something there Helen. In PSE I am so used to being able to move the shadow around by clicking and dragging my mouse on the page when the Style Settings box is open making it easier to place the shadow exactly where you want. In Affinity Photo I have to use the sliders to manoeuvre the shadow and I don’t find that as good. I know it’s a case of getting used to it but still...

I like the work you've done here Helen, the air balloon is effective with the shadow also gives the balloon the moving effect with little depth to the sky.

Thanks, Lillias. You do have the option to create a layer from the effect but I still had a hard time trying to make it do what I wanted. I also wondered if it might have something to do with all the curves on the edge of the balloon, but Tom has lots of curves in his example.
Well thank you, Jim.....that's what I was trying to achieve.....somehow my vision and results didn't quite match up but at least this one didn't find its way to the trash.

Think this may be better...... Good for you! It is an effective image Helen.
You asked for some suggestions, but other than what I said before (that the 3 settings of a drop shadow strongly impact the illusion), is that the drop shadow illusion is stronger with a light colored background layer. FWIW, here are the settings for the first drop shadow in this image:

Helen - everything in my life is a scrapbook page. I see color combinations and I think “hmmm, that would make a great background for a layout.” I see a situation and think - how can I use this on a page. 😉😉
