For some reason whenever I thought about a B&W theme for the month this subject came to mind even though it cuts across many other B&W Challenge themes. Maybe the time of year here as well as the fact that I'd been looking through some old images and realising how many were of natural scenes. A definition of natural is: "existing in or caused by nature; not made by humankind" So trees, flowers, animals, rocks, skies, oceans and lots of other things will work for this challenge - especially those that work well in Black and White as many "natural" subjects do. I'll start off with some trees and rocks that I found in files and converted to B&W. Looking to seeing your natural images. Tony

I love the overall mood of both of your starters, Tony. This should prove to be an interesting challenge.

Good timing Tony. I just got back from my morning walk-in-the-woods a couple hours ago. Fuji X100V, f4.5, 1/125, iso 640, b/w conversion in ACR. Thanks for the theme!

Rocky Peak in Chatsworth, CA. Click image twice for an extra large close-up view. Rock climbers enjoy climbing here.

I hope Tony will agree that underwater is part of the natural world. Anyway, this photo, Red Lionfish in Black & White, was taken a couple of years ago at Baltimore Aquarium. I cropped it, converted to b&w using Nik Silver Efex Pro, processed in Photoshop, ACR, Color Efex by Nik. It took a lot of cleaning up and needed noise reduction (I usually just use ACR for that unless there's a lot). I do like this and it just won an award this month, so I guess someone else did, too.

I have to agree with Helen - many really excellent natural B&W's and a great cross section of nature from elephants to fish with trees, flowers and rocks in between. Keep them coming.

I posted the colour version of this tulip tree flower in the weekly theme so thought I'd see what it would look like in black and white (using Silver Efex Pro for conversion) Tony
