I'm glad to see you accepted this challenge kdcintx ! It is a bit hard to see some parts of the image, so I am wondering of using a different wood background would help. You should be able to load another wood texture into the file and turn off the one used to see the difference. Does that help at all?

I found that adjusting the angle of the bevel can help quite a bit in making the cutout realistic. Tpgettys ..that comment didn’t impact upon me at first reading but it did on second reading of this Challenge. And I thought you can’t adjust the angle of the bevel using just PSE which is unfortunate. You can only choose up or down. Then I remembered that only recently I had bought Elements+ as an alternative to buying a new version of PSE. I was delighted to find that using Elements+ I had the ability to make adjustments much more akin to those in the full PS.
In the example below I placed my original effort on the dogs head next to one done using Elements+ and if you click on it to enlarge the image you can see a difference. Bear in mind I’m new to this so still experimenting with the settings. I have also supplied my Bevel and Emboss settings in the Elements+ dialogue box for anyone interested.

Thanks so much for adding your panel, Lillias. I need to spend more time fiddling with those sliders to see the differences they make. You may have motivated me to give this another try.

I found that adjusting the angle of the bevel can help quite a bit in making the cutout realistic. I should have been more clear here; what I was referring to is the Lighting Angle that is at the top of the Style Settings panel in PSE:
However, I really appreciate that you took the time to show us the vastly superior controls that Elements+ puts in our hands; I had no idea!

what I was referring to is the Lighting Angle that is at the top of the Bevels panel in PSE: That’s ok Tom. I forgot that you can change the Lighting Angle in PSE. My mind was stuck on Bevels not lighting. But it worked out as it made me look to see what Elements+ offered in the Bevel and Emboss line and I was pleasantly surprised.

Tried different settings on the panel. The image I chose is probably too busy. It is one of my own and seemed to me the type of image that might be used for a woodcutting.

The image I chose is probably too busy. It is a busy image but I think it worked well. I could see this as a woodcutting. Looks like a lovely old church.

I think it definitely works Helen! It's quite a nice subject for this effect.

I did another similar to Helen's that I want to share. I got the idea from Lillias to embellish the image by incorporating text, shapes and frames. (click for full-size view)

You're too quick for me, Tom! What I especially like are the "deep cuts" that you and Lillias have been able to achieve. Also like the sun and edging on the one above. You should add your favorite to your gallery!

The row of small buildings make a good subject and look good as a woodcutting Tom. I like the embellishments too.
Lovely flower Frank. Would make a lovely panel in a door.
