Tough choice, Frank. They both have visual appeal. I like the melting ice in the bottom one contrasted with the dark water. I find the first one intriguing as I immediately visualized a person on horseback riding through the icy river. For that reason I might go with the first one. With the rider in mind I would flip it horizontally.

Thanks for sharing Frank. I like both of them. I feel the second picture has greater potential but needs to be processed a bit more. Maybe a bit of brightness and contrast. I like the contrast between the bright ice and the wavy dark water below. There is a good sense of depth and the composition pulls you in to explore the image.
Kind regards Chris

I'd go with the second one - the first is a little too busy and I'm not sure what I should be looking at while with the second my eye goes straight to the melting icicles with the ice making a natural frame to the image.

Matt K ( www.mattk.com) recommends asking yourself "What's the 'Why" of your photo?" In the 1st photo, I'm not sure what the "why" is supposed to be. In the 2nd photo, the melting ice seems to be the apparent "why." So, my pick is the second photo, but the first photo is nice too.

Frank, Both appealing images. Cropped as is, I'd also with with number 2. However, if the top photo was cropped quite hard around the dead leaves, then would probably give the nod to #1. Clive

At first look, I like #2 because the subject is easily identified. That being said, looking at #1 my feeling is that if the dark area was reduced (by cropping) the subject would become more prominent.
