My brother tells me this needs a foreground, middle ground and background to maintain one's interest. For me, it was the reflection and colors here that caught my eye. Unfortunately, I had no way of getting down to the water level as the drop off was significant. How can I crop this, and even with cropping, is it an image that is a washout?

I like the image for the reasons you mentioned. To me, it does have a foreground, middle ground, and background. I also like the composition. You might try cropping out a smidgen of the sky and see how it looks. But I like it the way it is.

I agree with Karen. It entered my mind to take a smidge off the top but the way your presented it works fine for me. Another fun thread to follow....thanks for starting it, Pat!

First of wonderful image - to me it has a little to much sky. I would try a crop and more contrast and darkening the trees.

For my taste this certainly is NOT a washout. Maybe crop a bit of the sky!

The photo doesn’t need cropping. I like the sky being bigger than the water. When both are the same size, it looks ordinary. (Don’t know where that is coming from.Usually I am the queen of centering 🤪)

Hey thanks! This group is always so helpful! I am now inspired to continue to hunt for these types of reflections and colors.

Pat, I agree with Janice regarding the top and bottom UNLESS ... Unless you crop some of the right side off. In which case, it might be something like this in which some of the bottom was removed. IMHO it needs all of the sky. If you wish to keep the width then, like cats4jan, I'd not crop it. Clive

I agree with Clive ... leave the sky. My crop is very similar to Clive's except I left a litltle more on the right and a little less water. What aspect ratio are you using?

Aspect ratio: 16X9. I seem to use it a lot with landscapes.

Aspect ratio: 16X9. I seem to use it a lot with landscapes. I tend to crop to the photo vs any specific aspect ratio. Even if making large prints (which I don't do a lot of) I will crop to suit and then select a larger format from the lab and then trim as needed. One lab in town is easy to deal with and will custom print.
