While articles on AI generated images have been shared here before, this is the first one I remember where the winner has refused the prize. Interesting? Worrying? Frightening? Exciting? Perhaps the impact on photography is the least of our worries. Agree with all of the descriptors.

I saw that article as well Howard, to me the image, especially the hands don't look right and I'm surprised that wasn't noted before awarding it a prize.

I rather liked the suggestion in one of the comments in the Guardian that it should be called fauxtography .. I suspect there are going to some interesting discussions as I believe the category it was entered in did allow for many kinds of creative image techniques and use of AI in creating an image is certainly creative.

There was a follow up article today and yes, you are quite correct tonyw, AI was allowed in that category. Furthermore, it seems the judges knew it was AI generated before awarding the prize. The suggestion is that the artists prize refusal and subsequent comments were a bit of a publicity stunt and hence Sony have fallen out with him over being used in that way, rather than for "cheating". And fauxtography is a great name!

Fauxtography is a perfect name. And I agree that the hands don't look right.

Looks like a winner to me, I think she was robbed.

The woman's hand looks fake to me - but she’s a mannequin so not surprising!
