These are pretty basic questions but they have been bugging me for awhile now:
1. I've noticed that You Tube tuts by HTG George and others usually show file names for the current photos they've previously opened listed on the left side of the white border between the workplace area and the grey border above that listing (to the left of the words "Quick, Guided and Expert") so they can easily click on their images. In mine though, the only way I can bring up the file names for the photos I've already opened is to click on the down arrow menu next to the word "OPEN" which then gives me a list of my recently opened photos. It's no big deal but it does make me do that extra step. Is there a setting I can change to be able to see my open file names without having to use that down arrow?
2. The down arrow menu also lists several other photos names besides the images I'm currently working on. How do I clear that list once I'm done with my current project? Thank you.

It seems you might be referring to whether or not you have selected "enable floating document" in Preferences. Third image. You can only see file names by selecting "open" ?  Is this what you see? Taken from an HTG George video.  Enable "floating document..." ... this allows all open docs to be moved (at will) wherever on the screen.

I’m not sure I understand your question exactly either Jim but here is what I would say...and I hope I am not repeating what Clive has said... In order to see your open images along the top bar of PSE in what I would call tabs you require to go into Preferences and uncheck 'Allow Floating Documents in Expert Mode'. As per first screen shot below. Second screen shot shows the tabs and also if you open the Photo Bin at the bottom of PSE you will see the thumbnails of the images which gives another way of accessing said images by clicking on them. Hope this helps...If you click on the screen shots you will see an enlarged version.   |

As it has already been pointed out part of the solution is to open the image as Tabs and not floating. Next the Open with the down arrow show the last 5 image that you opened - not what you have open. Just as a test open ten images and see how many are displayed when you click on Open. Another test, open 1 image and click on Open and see how many are displayed. If you just start Elements and click on Open it will show you the list of the last images with none of them open.  |

This has nothing to do with being able to see the file names. This is about how to view the images you open. Now you have two choices -- the old way or the new way. In those videos they are using Tabs/Tabbed Images. Down arrow menu next to the word "OPEN":This is a feature Adobe introduced in PSE 11. When you click on the small downward-pointing arrow, you can select a recently opened file from the list. Also, If in PSE preferences you have selected Allow Floating Documents and/or Enable Floating Documents, you can still open these images in tabs. Choose Window>Images>Consolidate All to Tabs  |

In order to see your open images along the top bar of PSE in what I would call tabs you require to go into Preferences and uncheck 'Allow Floating Documents in Expert Mode'. Thanks Lillias. I had "Allow Floating Docs" checked and after I unchecked it it now shows those written tabs. I still have "Enable floating doc. window docking" checked though because I usually dock the background image as soon as I bring it into the editor (probably because that's what HTG George always does  ). Is that the best procedure also? |

Is this what you see? Taken from an HTG George video. Thanks for your responses, Clive. Yes that's what I see in his videos except that when he has opened multiple images, they all show as tabs. Anyway, after I unchecked "Allow Floating Documents in Expert Mode" I can now see my images tabs also so that seems to have solved it. |

If in PSE preferences you have selected Allow Floating Documents and/or Enable Floating Documents, you can still open these images in tabs. Choose Window>Images>Consolidate All to Tabs Thank you for that tip too, Frank. |

Although you didn't mention it, now that I unchecked "Allow Floating Documents in Expert Mode" I can view my images both ways at the same time, i.e. as written tabs and as thumbnails in the photo bin. Jim, I didn't mention viewing the photo thumbnails in the Photo Bin because they are not a variable to consider if you choose displaying your photos as Tabs or if you choose not to use Tabs. The "old way or the new way" has to do non-Tabs vs Tabs, not with the Photo Bin. The Photo Bin will display your photo thumbnails no matter which "way" you choose (non-Tabs or Tabs). |

I usually dock the background image as soon as I bring it into the editor (probably because that's what HTG George always does ). Is that the best procedure also? I’m not trying to be funny here but I would say the best procedure really is the one that works best for you. I agree that HTG George always has his background image docked but thereafter he usually works with floating documents. When I first started working with PSE some years back, knowing no better at the time, I worked with floating documents but found that if I had several images open at the same time all these floating images in my workspace drove me round the bend. The image I wanted at any given time always seemed to be hidden behind some of the other images and I had to plough my way through to find it. (I had not discovered the photo bin at that time) It was only when I saw a video done using Photoshop by Martin Geller of Blue Lightning TV and I saw how he worked with docked/tabbed images that I discovered that I could work the same way using PSE and what a difference. My sanity was saved...LOL. There is no right or wrong way, as I said at the beginning, choose the one that works best for you and you will be good to go. |
