I know there must be a simple answer to this that is alluding me! When creating my last submission for the EP challenge I used a free png. I wasn't able to select my subject from the background and just add it to our forum as a png. Instead it came in with the checkered background. I then went back to PS and added a white background and added it that way. Am I wrong in thinking that I should have been able to select the subject and add it as a png without the checkerboard background?

The file format is PNG, however it has no TRANSPARENT pixels.

This can be very annoying Helen and this type of file is I believe what they call a Fake png file. Researching the subject I found this short video which shows that there are different types of checkered backgrounds and also describes how to deal with it within Photoshop. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FIYgibZazY I also discovered that Adobe Express has a free quick action which removes this type of background for you. See the link below... www.adobe.com/express/feature/image/remove-background And a short video showing the Adobe Express Action in use www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFRzszsf1tI And for anybody who may be interested Adobe Express also have several other free Quick Actions. Namely, Resize Image, Convert to JPG, Convert to PNG, Convert to SVG and Crop Image.

Thank you so much, Lillias! I hadn't realized that there were two kinds of png. files. The Adobe Express action worked perfectly. You might want to add this info to the tips and tricks board.

Glad that worked for you Helen. This sort of thing can be so frustrating. I'm going to be out for the evening but I will add something to the Tips and Tricks board later all being well.

I believe the 'fake png' happens because someone has taken a screenshot or clipping of a png from a website where they don't want to download the actual png - because they don't want to sign up at that site or they don't want to pay to join the website. If the checkered background shows when you find the png, clipping or taking a screenshot will give you the graphic and a checkered background to deal with. It's not like a nice white background that is so easily deleted with other sources of graphics.

Do you happen to recall which site you found the image on? I wanted to see if I get the same result.

I went looking for image (potato head), but it finally occurred to me that you were talking about the billboard. I did find it finally on freepik, and can confirm that while it 'looks' like a png, it is not. The situation is quite likely just as Janice described. Not that it helps at this point, but I was able to find a large number of png's of billboards on all of the png sites I visited, such as: www.pngmart.com/categorieswww.cleanpng.com/
There are quite a few more in the Goodies board under Clipart.
