I watched a video today where the person was using PS CC and locked the layer (a black image of a feather) and then Painted onto that layer using the brush tool with a water color brush ...
when I lock my layer in PSE I cannot write over the pixels at all to 'colorize' that feather with my water colors
is there a way to edit ... while locked ??
thnx

It would be helpful if we could see that video. Can you post the link?
Also, we could use more details on what you are trying to do. For example, if the feather is on a transparent background, you can lock the transparent pixels. In this way, you will be able to paint only on the feather and not on the transparent area of the layer. When you paint, the brushstrokes will stop at the edges of the feather (even if the brush cursor is on the transparent area.

1. Activate the layer.
2. Click on the "Lock transparent pixels" icon. It is the smaller blue padlock with a checkerboard next to it.
NOTE: This icon will be grayed out if the active layer doesn't contain any transparent pixels.
To unlock . . .
1. Activate the layer.
2. Click on the blue padlock with a checkerboard icon again.

This can be done in Elements. Just follow the instructions I posted in my previous post.

I have just started using this. Before, I never knew what it did. Locking pixels is sometimes easier than making a selection - and it works the same. Thanks, Sepiana.

Janice, you are most welcome! The same here -- I have been using this locked pixels technique more and more.
