Note: Defrag auto every Wednesday, at 7%. No noticeable positive differences as I cannot get to 43 history states anymore, much less the 50 I had. 1. Layer/new/ layer > overlay. fill gray. Worked at first. Tested by lowering Black opacity and running big brush over and over with clicking. I then switched to White and "Program Error" [ I have Burn always set at 4%. Dodge is usually set at 9% and pushed on occasion. 2. [The new post] 3. I uninstalled the program. I restarted PC. I installed the program. I set the scratch pad to D: Factory Image with 1.63 Gb free and no other 'traffic noise'. I restarted PC. I worked on a photo, did 3/4 got "Program Error". Saved as PSD. Closed E7. Opened E7 and opened PSD, finished ok. Started new image, less than a third done, and Burn Tool Prog Error. 'Reset all tools" They reset but cannot be used due to "Program Error". 4. When a "Program Error" comes up that stops me I can save to PSD and it is always ready to do more with few or no problems. Would rather not work this way.

Thank you for your time and ideas. 3. Download rather than use the CD I have? About 4 or 5 years ago I bought a Bamboo tablet and Elements 3 came with it.(Separate disc)
I would think that my PC would age more than data on a disc. However, I will do as you suggested. I should try everything I can and have that info if I need to use one of the links. Again, thanks!

viewerx,
Do not use the CD; use the download provided by Adobe. If this workaround doesn't work, then, I again strongly recommend -- post in either one of the Adobe forums mentioned earlier in this thread. Save yourself some time and frustration!
The issue here is not the age of the data on the disk. From what you said, this problem developed some time ago. It all points towards a corrupted file somewhere on your computer. It is not the age of your computer either. As you said, Elements 7 was working just fine until recently. This new problem, the Program Error message, could even be related to a Windows update. Did you remember installing such an update just prior when you began having problems?
Here is something else -- Check the Events Log. You should be able to determine which Elements module is at fault.

I get updates most every Wednesday.
I used the download. It took forever for the installer to load. I clicked the .exe. It took about twice as long to load all the files. When it finished I clicked on the Icon and it loaded. It asked me for my serial number. I entered it correctly 2 times and both times it said I had an incorrect number. (??)
I guess I will try the 'free trial' option to see if the same bugs show up and add this to the info I will need to tell the other forum.
Thanks again

As to the problem with the serial number -- you need to take it to Adobe. If you have registered your copy of Elements, Adobe will keep a record of it. You could try this link.
helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?step=PSE
EDIT: Yes, it is a good idea to post in the Adobe forums I mentioned. They have the resources and the manpower to better help you. They may even be able to access your computer remotely to try to diagnose the problem.

I never did get around to registering it whenever I have reinstalled it. If this had been bug free that would have been it. I just did another 4 in the series and I got 3 errors deep into them. Each time I used a different tool for a moment and something was reset as I could then do what was stopped. So, not nearly as bad, but, not totally free of it.
Because of my not registering, I won't consider that a problem when I go to the other links. I now have a large amount of info to tell them.
Thanks.

You don't have to register your copy of Elements every time you uninstall/reinstall this program. It is one-time thing. You do it the first time you purchase/install it. I also have Elements 7. As I have changed computers quite a few times, I had to reinstall this program too. I never had to go through the registration process again. Adobe has my registration number, safe on its servers.

"Check the Events Log" Wow, there is a lot of stuff there. Many items per day for a year and a half. Last year I seem to have had lots of: "Event 19, WHEA logger". Differing opinions on the net, plus.. it was last year.
Is there any area that would be watching programs that were added? 'Software" is all HP.

See if this will help. -- Troubleshoot install using logs | Elements The reason I brought up the Event Log is because, based on my experience, there is a good chance they will ask to see it when you take this issue to the Adobe forums.

I'm coming late to this thread, but a couple of questions/comments:
- The D: Factory Image should NOT be used. This drive partition is required if you need to restore your computer back to its original state (when you bought it). Don't try using this drive.
- You say your computer is 64-bit - how much total RAM does the system have? As Sepiana pointed out, PSE 7 is only 32-bit so it won't see the full amount. However, I am curious how much the PC has.

Hi, sorry for delay. Still have the problems. Apparently they no longer make the y5414s, as the page I had bookmarked with the specs is gone. The label on the side says "Memory 4 Gigs".

Hi viewerx,
I sincerely don't know what is causing all these problems. I have gone through the standard troubleshooting steps. Your computer has 4 GB RAM. That should be enough to run Elements 7. Once I had Elements 7 as well Elements 10 installed on a laptop with the same amount of RAM. I never had any of the problems you describe. Here are the system requirements for Elements 7. As you can see, Adobe says -- "1 GB of RAM".

Did you ever post in the Adobe Photoshop Elements forum or in the Adobe Feedback forum as suggested earlier in this thread? What did they have to say?
