Hi al, welcome to PSE&M!
It would be helpful to have more details but . . . I will go out on a limb here.
I am assuming you created the oval shape using the appropriate tool. Do you have this shape on its own layer? If so, it will be on a transparent background. Delete the original background layer or hide it. Save your picture in a format which will preserve background transparency such as PSD, PNG. Now, when you print, all you will get is an oval-shaped picture.

Um, I'm not sure how that would work if you're deleting the background layer (actual picture)?

Um, I'm not sure how that would work if you're deleting the background layer (actual picture)? The oval selection will be on its own layer on a transparent background, or I should say, surrounded by a transparent background. Deleting or hiding the original background layer (the actual picture) will have no effect on the oval shape layer.

Ah. When you wrote the oval shape I didn't realize you were talking about an oval selection of the background photo.

Ah. When you wrote the oval shape I didn't realize you were talking about an oval selection of the background photo. That's what I am assuming the OP did. He made an oval selection and placed it on its own layer. As I said before, without having all the details, I am going out on a limb here.
