How can I stop Lightroom from opening until I tell it to ???

Just to see what it was all about, I recently installed Lightroom; it is a trial for now.

I have already found an extreme annoyance that could be a real deal breaker for us; every time I connect a flash-drive or external drive, and every time I load a DVD, Lightroom barges onto the scene and takes over; surely this behavior can be turned off.

How do I go about setting LR to stay out of things until I want it open ?

Hi,
Try 'Edit'
'Preferences'
'General' tab
then uncheck the 'Show import dialog when a memory card is detected' under import options
