The key combination for de-selecting a selection is Ctrl-D, (Cmd-D).
Another way to de-select a selection is to press the Escape key.

always used ctrl/command d - didn't know about escape -i think it would be easier to use escape. TFS

I didn't know that one Moto thanks and I agree with Janice I think using Escape would be easier.

I discovered this by luck.
I was in a state of sleep deprivation and momentarily couldn't remember the key combo to de-select a selection and thought that maybe the ESC key would work.
And it did.
