I know that the CCleaner software has been mentioned on this forum, so I thought I should share that they announced today that some versions of the software were hacked into and could have infected users machines. You can read about it at the link below. An updated version has been released that everyone should download. techcrunch.com/2017/09/18/avast-reckons-ccleaner-malware-infected-2-27m-users/

I was surprised to learn that Avast now owns the Piriform software and they also own AVG too.

Last night, my Zone Alarm popped up. They said I had a virus - ccleaner. Zone Alarm had sorted it. To be on the safe side, I uninstalled ccleaner. Then today, I put on a new version - which was virus free.

When I ran Ccleaner today I was prompted to run an important security update which I of course did. I find this behavior very responsible due to the fact that I use the free version which doesn't automatically update. Here's their announcement.

I agree, Pete. I have used the free version for years, and found it excellent. I had notice of an update, today.

I was reading an article in a Firefox forum re the CCleaner hack and it pointed to another article in the majorgeeks site where they say “If you are one of the unlucky CCleaner v5.33 32-Bit users then the infected version, once installed, created a Windows Registry Key in your system and even if you have updated to the latest version there will still be a tell-tale sign left in the Windows Registry”. They then go on to show you how to check your Registry to see if you have the key in question…see link here
