....other than the fact that a scanner was involved! Nevertheless I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable in all things computer can explain what has happened!
I was sent an 8 page pdf (size 739kb) that needed signing and sending back. I printed it off, signed then scanned the documents and saved as a pdf. The document is now 8.3mb and I can't send it as the recipient's email won't accept it as it is too large!
Can someone please explain to me how this 739kb pdf file has metamorphosed into a 8.3mb one merely by scanning it?

Bayla I am outside my knowledge zone here, but I suspect that textual PDF files are like Microsoft Word files in that they contain the text content plus some formatting information. That doesn't take much space compared to a digital image which is composed of pixels, lots and lots of pixels, each of which take at least 3 bytes of information. Converting the scanned image to a PDF only puts a wrapper around the image to make it compatible with a PDF reader; it is the digital image plus more!

Hi bayla, it will depend on the DPI resolution that you scanned at. Have a look for advanced options on the scanner and re scan. If you have Photoshop cc there is a quality option for saving PDF files. Hope that helps

x2 on the dpi increasing the size of the pdf.
You will need to scan it in at a lower resolution and that might solve the problem. It may not, they may be able to send you large files but not receive them. You can use Dropbox or something similar to transfer the file instead or have them open a gmail account, I don't think there are any limits(that I have encountered) on gmail.

Thanks everyone. I never thought to change the resolution of the scan simply because I've never encountered this problem before! I'll know before I next have to send documents to this particular government office again.
In the end I opened the pdf and then saved it as a pdf optimized and that did the trick, brought the size down to just over 1mb which was acceptable.
Another learning experience!
