I thought I should start a new thread.
Thinking that Windows would have to be reinstalled, I moved my bits and bobs to my external hard drive. I had things in my downloads section. But I can't put them back again. I also did a new download today, and it went straight on to my desktop. When I go to - Start - Downloads. Or try from the libraries panel, this is what I get.
I don't recall the downloads folder being plain white previously. I always use the Firefox browser. Don't know why Explorer has come on the second screen shot.
Can you help me on this problem, please.

I don't recall the downloads folder being plain white previously. In Windows 7, the icon for the Downloads folder is the same Manilla brown as all the other folders, plus it also has a downward pointing blue arrow. I didn't quite understand, did you reinstall the O/S (operating system) ?

I always use the Firefox browser. Don't know why Explorer has come on the second screen shot.
It is a bit confusing; "Internet Explorer" is a browser, just like Chrome, FireFox, and so forth; "Windows Explorer" is the computers program and file manager; does that make sense ?

If anything else goes wrong . . . .
I have twice written a reply on here, and each time, it has vanished into cyber space.
I followed the link which Simone gave. The first suggestion on the list - worked. My downloads folder is active again.
But, programs are still downloading to the desktop. I just drag them into 'downloads' - and there they stay. I can live with that.
My grateful thanks to you both.

Whippet - bIn Firefox, go to Tools | Options | General. About halfway down the page you'll see a heading that says Downloads. That's where you can choose where your downloaded files go.
