I use Google Chrome, so my favourites are stored on there. I am wanting to export them to an external hard drive (for safe keeping.) The only information I can find, is for exporting from Windows Explorer - and of course as I never use it . . . . Can anyone help, please.

If you have a Google account, you can use that to sign in to Google Chrome. Then you can sync your bookmarks with your Google account. This will make them available on any device that has Google Chrome, and also works as a backup.
