Yes, your PSE6 is much too old and it can't convert the raw files of any camera issued after the availability of PSE6 (October 2007). Your 3300 would require at least PSE13. That said, you can download the free Adobe DNGconverter mentioned in the above faq to batch convert a whole folder of your NEFs to the DNG raw format that PSE6 can read and edit. An additional batch operation, but free and with the same quality.

If I were to upgrade to a newer version, where would be the best place(s) to buy?

Hi richrd, welcome to PSE&M! Glad to have you here.
I have no experience with retailers; I have always purchased PSE directly from Adobe. You could check retailers such as Amazon, Adorama, B&H Video, Best Buy, Walmart, Office Depot.
Just keep in mind that, because you already have PSE, you are entitled to the Upgrade price (instead of the Full price). The difference in price is determined by your status -- no previous ownership vs. previous ownership of PSE. This is how Adobe rewards customers' loyalty!

You have the choice to: 1 - order directly by download to Adobe 2 - order to retailers or big resellers like Amazon 3 - order from Windows or Mac stores.
If price is your main concern, take advantage of the 20% rebate Update price from Adobe. The best prices are generally offered by big resellers, but also by Adobe in limited promotion periods.
The Win or Mac stores may be interesting, for instance I believe they allow more than two computers to be activated.
If you want to have a Win and Mac version on a box (dual perpetual license), choose a big reseller (not available from Adobe)
If you are concerned by support and availability for updates and new downloads, forget Win/Mac stores.
Warning, the new Adobe policy makes downloading older versions than the last two ones difficult or impossible. Keep copies of the downloaded installers, do copies of your install disks. I have kept a copy of my recent installers from PSE12, just in case... I may copy my PSE10 disks and store them in a different location for safety.
