The Liquify filter in Elements does not have a Freeze Mask like Photoshop, which enables you to apply this effect selectively from within the filter dialog itself. Fortunately, there is a workaround which comes pretty close and gets the job done. Photoshop -- You will be able to edit the Freeze Mask from within the Liquify filter dialog. Elements -- You will have to edit the mask in the Editor, i.e., fine-tune your selection edges before you bring your image into the Liquify filter dialog. 1. Select the area to be protected from the effects of the Liquify filter. You can use the Quick Selection tool or the Selection Brush tool. 2. Invert your selection (Shift-Ctrl-I/Shift-Cmmd-I). 3. Go to Filter>Distort>Liquify. The Liquify filter has placed a red film (mask) over the protected area (just like the Freeze Mask in Photoshop). 4. Apply the Liquify filter. Its effects will be applied to the remaining image. The selected area will be protected by the red film (mask); this filter won’t touch the protected area. NOTE Step 1 -- You can also use Select > Subject (introduced in PSE 2020). It enables you to automatically select the main subject in your image with just one click.
