I have moved files from one folder to another (using Faststone Viewer), rather than through the organizer, which seems to take so long. The moved files do not show up in their new location, even if I delete both folders from organizer (but not the hard disk) and re-import them into the organizer.
Also, sometimes when I import files into a folder, a message comes up saying they are already in the organizer and the location shows another folder. In this case, I have not moved images from one folder to another. It seems that Organizer cannot show an image in two folders at the same time. I cannot recall having this problem before.
What am I missing?

The golden rule with the organizer or any management software based on a catalog (like Lightroom) is to never delete, move or rename files outside of the organizer. The catalog stores links to the physical location (drive and path) of each file. It is not aware of such changes. If you move outside of the organizer, the only way to update the catalog for the new location is to use the 'reconnect' feature immediately; you can help the reconnection process by navigating to the new location.
By the way, moving files from the organizer is generally not longer than moving them from the Explorer. Just like with the Explorer, moving files is very fast if you move your files within the same drive and it's longer when you move to another drive. In the latter case, the files are copied to the new destination and deleted from the original one. That's the deletion which is slow with the organizer. Moving within the same drive does not 'move' files on your disks, it simply updates their location in the Explorer or the catalog.
The usual way to 'import' files or to use 'watched' folders to tell the organizer to scan your drives for new files does not work because it compares each file (size in MB and date_taken) of the scanned files with the files in the catalog (which may be disconnected). That's to avoid creating duplicates and explains the error message you get in that case.
To delete from catalogs the 'disconnected' files before attempting to re-import, use the 'Find' menu option for disconnected files. Pay attention to the small icon on the top of the dialog box (3 horizontal bars). It opens a drop-down menu letting you 'select' all and 'delete' all. Deletion from catalog may be rather long, but after that, you can import the files again from the changed location.
If you know the new location of the files, the fastest way to solve the problem is to move back the files from Fastone, then to move them from the organizer where you want.
I am not sure what you are expecting with "show an image two folders at the same time". When you are in folder view, only the images in one folder are selected. On other views, for instance in albums covering several folders, you can see all selected images.

Thanks Michel. Good to know. Re showing an image in two folders.... I created a new folder for my project and copied (not moved) over files from my working folder. I then tried to import them into organizer but they would not show up in my new project folder because they were already in the working folder. I tried deleting both files in organizer and re-importing them, but got the same result, so I assumed the files could not show up in two places in organizer. Now that I see your explanation, I suspect the issue is related to using an outside element (Faststone, Windows Explorer) to move or copy files.

About the impossibility to import the same photo or an exact copy in the catalog: - Dealing with a single file, the workaround is often to use the File > Duplicate command, which creates a copy with the suffixe -copy in the same folder and in the catalog. Unfortunately, that does not work for a batch of selected images. - I have played with the option File >> Copy/move to removable drive. That (legacy) command works not only for removable drives, but also on internal drives. You copy your files to a destination folder. Wait for the confirmation message and check from the Explorer that the files have been copied. Then import from that destination folder. Ignore the possible message that there are no files in the folder and wait for the import to take place. I can't guarantee that will always work and I have not found why such import is not filtered as duplicate. Probably a difference in another exif date. I am curious to get feedback from other users about that workaround.
