I have been on the phone with HP techs in India all afternoon literally over 4 hours. They led me thru test after test which the machine passed in all cases. The repetitive issues they were winessing via our phone con indicates to them that the answer at the moment is a corrupt OS and they are sending me 2 recovery CD's which I should have by Wed. or Thur. this week. They (HP) said they can't just authorize a full replacement until all rules/procedures by HP are followed and/or met. They said normally HP would only authorize relacement if it was a hardware breakdown such as broken parts, shipping damage etc. That BS all sounds like the so called Warranty is quite limited. Then before it could be authorised they would need to physically bench test it again and they then would fix it if possible if it was mechanically sound. I mentioned that all of the tech support, labor etc was more costly than immediate replacement. The techs agreed but said they were governed by the rules. I can appreciate that honesty,,,,,,,,,,and they were a nice bunch of troopers.
I spoke with the local store manager after the bout with the HP techs and he said if the recovery CD's don't fix it, to bring it back and he would replace it. I think he is as frustrated with all of this as I am.

Personally, I would never buy an HP computer - this may be a sign that you should avoid them too!

In contrast to Major, I've had extremely goo luck with HP desktop computers! I have had one, and it has lasted a very long time; so going as we "speak"! However, when I had to contact their tech support it was not such a good experience; the language barrier made it almost impossible to be understand. Good tech support is priceless. It is worth calling tech support for any product BEFORE you buy to get a sense of the quality.

That is excellent advice. I've had HP products that were fine, Dell, too. Even Gateway. Don't know what brand I'd get today, but I do know that if I buy it at Sam's Club, their return policy is the best and that makes me feel safe when I purchase electronics. But I don't know how their extended warrantly people are.
