One more - and a question for you all! Here's a pic taken this morning that I rather liked and thought it fit the theme - and the second is a close crop of the first that is truly minimalist. So which do you prefer? Tony

The sky serves as a nice background for your windmill, Jim. The angle that you chose to shoot from adds interest to the composition.

Tony....I like your idea as a path to nothing.....that in itself might qualify it as minimalist, maybe. I like the image a lot. I'm glad to hear.... I also was a bit surprised at what was considered minimalist in that mag . Before starting to check sources for this challenge I had a very distinct idea of what I thought qualified an image to be thought of as minimalist. Now I am not so sure! It would be interesting to hear how other members have interpreted this idea of "minimalist photography". As I have always said....we are here to learn from each other.....

Tony.... I prefer your first image with the three thistle pods. I like the way the subject(s) stand out from the background. While the second one might be more in tune with my original idea of what constitutes a minimalist image....it also seems....boring. I hasten to say that I only say that because I made the same decision about an image that I took that looks very much like yours!

And now for a question of my own........ I originally took this image for the theme.... BUT......then I thought it needed a "subject"......somewhere to land your eye. So created this composite.... Sooo.....like Tony, I ask which do you prefer? And which one do you think fits the theme better? NOTE.....when Simone and I started this challenge back in 2015....we both wanted to share our love for black and white photography but wanted members to know that we in no way considered ourselves "experts". It seems that is worth repeating!
Double Note! It's been pointed out to me that the Black and White Challenge didn't start till 2017.

My preference would definitely be for the first one Tony. It's minimalist in my book but still full of interest. Sooo.....like Tony, I ask which do you prefer? And which one do you think fits the theme better? I prefer the second one Helen as for me that little boat on the horizon gives me somewhere to... as you say... 'land your eye'. These threads are giving me more of an insight into B&W photography, not something I particularly liked before. You are educating me.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Lillias. If the B/W Challenge, has in some small way, fostered your appreciation of B/W photography that is nice to hear. I found another article from Click Magazine that seems to rather simply illustrate my initial thoughts about minimalist photography.

Double Note! It's been pointed out to me that the Black and White Challenge didn't start till 2017.I have to agree that the one with the boat on the horizon would be my preference. One of my favourite photography books is by Michael Freeman - The Photographers Mind (he has several others in the series that are also excellent). He has an almost identical composition (a fishing boat in the Gulf of Thailand) to illustrate Space as a Subject. He has the horizon placed low in the frame like yours to focus attention on the sky. In his case it was the colours in an evening sky, in your case it's the cloud. The boat is there to give a sense of scale and draw in the eye so the reaction is "wow that's a big and interesting cloud" - which may well have been what was in the photographers mind when the shot was taken! Only suggestion would be maybe to work a bit more on the sky to bring out more dimension to the clouds. I'm guessing it looked more dramatic in reality than it appears in B&W so a bit more tweaking of texture etc would be interesting perhaps. PS. I just found the Michael Freeman pic I was looking at on-line at issuu.com/wosvaldocastellanos/docs/michael_freeman._the_photographers_/12Tony

Tony, thanks for the link to the Michael Freeman image. I tried your suggestion for the cloud but I still might not have achieved as much contrast as you might have had in mind. Then just for fun, I tried giving the water a long exposure look as was in the Michael Freeman image. u.cubeupload.com/HMCA/DSC8072NewComposite.jpg

hmca Hope you don't mind me playing with your image but I took it into Lightroom ran the Clarity up to 100 and the DeHaze to 20 and applied the B&W 08 profile. Likely a bit overkill but I was interested to see the difference. Would be a good one for a RAW Challenge! And I do like the idea of a long exposure look for the ocean. Tony

Tony, I don't mind at all. When I said...... I tried your suggestion for the cloud but I still might not have achieved as much contrast as you might have had in mind. It could certainly be seen as an invitation to edit the image. My editing style is more restraint but I am always open to seeing another point of view. Thanks for showing me what you had in mind. I took some additional pictures of boats (there's probably a better name) working on sand replenishment for our beaches today. I haven't looked at them yet but will see if one might work for the next RAW challenge. Good suggestion.

Thanks for the theme and thoughtful discussion Helen. I'll try to add another from this month taken for the theme, but I'll post one from last month that I'm fond of.

Bill, I can see why you are fond of that scene. It works very well for this challenge. Look forward to seeing what else you may come up with.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my cloud image. I have two friends that I will sometimes ask for an opinion on a photo. One, like you, preferred it without the boat. My other friend like Lillias and Tony preferred it with the boat. I have gained a new appreciation for both of them!
Clive.....what a precious picture of Katie! Hope you have it framed somewhere......bet her Mom loves it, too.
