I having been using Faststone Image Viewer (FIV) as a first step in my editing workflow
After downloading my files from the camera, I download them into FIV and compare images to decide which are keepers. It also displays Raw files, the embedded jpg I presume, which most other viewers do not
It provides a histogram and the Exif for each file and I find it the most effective program for this job. Files deleted in FIV are also deleted from from my download file. The full screen mode is also great.
One problem, my version automatically puts a date stamp on every image. I do mostly Nature & wildlife photography and I insert text into each image to identify the species, the location and the date, to make identification easier, my memory is not that great. Unfortunately the date stamp is both distracting and and irrelevant and often obscures this text.
I have worked out how to edit the date stamp but have not found a method of removing it entirely.
Can anyone help me out on this one?

FastStone is the greatest thing to happen to photographers since the invention of the digital camera; I have used it through several versions and download any recent versions that come along. I cannot picture this date stamp you speak of. Like all programs, including your camera, there is a Date/Time Taken stamp and a DATE Last Modified stamp that appear in their appropriate fields in the EXIF data. Are you adding this text visible on the image, or within the metadata ? Where is this date stamp showing up ? If you could post some screenshots of what you are seeing, it would really help in understanding the situation. FastStone has a wonderful screen-shot feature. On EDIT: To capture a screenshot of FastStone itself, open a second instance/window of FastStone and use it to capture the screenshot of the other instance/window.

popcorn Sorry, unable to help you regarding the date/time stamp. But thanks for posting about Faststone IV. After BuckSkin raved about it, I had to try it. Very impressive for viewing photos. Windows File Explorer is my storage system (and is great for that) but is not good at either searching and quick viewing large images. I solved the search with the fabulous search software called, Everything. Faststone IV allows me to view dozens of photos without hesitation...Windows Image viewer just too slow image to image. So thanks for this post. If I learn anything about the date/time stamp I will post. Clive

The only situation in which Fastone added metadata text and date was when I used the Slideshow feature. It's an option and you can either play the slideshow onscreen or save it. The saved images keep the text.
