This subject was inspired by running across this article So What is Abstract Photography? and in particular the quote “If you show someone an example of your abstract photography and they say “wow, that’s a great photo….What is it?”, then you’ve nailed this genre of photography on the head!" . The article also has some good suggestions on how to look for ideas and subjects for abstract photography. Black and White is quite well suited to abstract photography as it puts more emphasis on the shape of things. There are lots of examples but here's one I ran across that gives some examples of abstract black and white photographs from nature. Note the example of motion blur in a forest - a good example of how to turn the recognizable into the unrecognizable. Black and White Abstract PhotographsHere are some examples I took - in all cases these are crops of larger images as I have a bad habit (from an abstract perspective) of including too much of the subject. The file names show what the subject was if you can't guess. Have fun creating some abstract images and looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Tony

Sounds like a fun challenge that will make me move beyond my comfort zone. Love your examples and I look forward to exploring the links.

Thanks Helen for getting this theme off to a great start. They look really good and I won’t even try deciding if the last one is abstract or minimalist but I did find this definition of Minimalism

Thanks, Tony. Reading the link on Minimalism it seems, I'm safe.

Here are a couple takes. Shooting into a box of mixed silverware at an antique store. In camera multiple exposure. Intentional camera motion. Thanks for the theme Tony!

And very nice too Bill! Particularly like the in-camera multiple exposure - you could hang that on the wall and have people try and figure out what it represents - definitely abstract. I'm going to have to try multiple exposure - it's in my camera menu somewhere I think.

I had to try multiple exposure - actually double exposure is all my camera will do but that was enough among the trees. Finished it off in Silver Efex using some antiquey settings. Tony

Silver Efex Pinhole preset made my image from today seem rather interesting I thought. Does anyone know what it is?

Interesting one Helen - it's either dinner plates on a corrugated mat or a stairway to heaven!

it's either dinner plates on a corrugated mat or a stairway to heaven! So glad you "saw" the stairway as that's what it reminded me of, too.

Being I just asked my husband if he knew what it was and he didn't. I guess this works.
