I have been having a weird problem with Elements ever since I upgraded to Elements 2021. In fact, I was working with a flower just now and my layers appeared fine. I used a filter (Filter Forge) and when the filter was done, there was a new layer, but it was blank. [this has happened with other plug-ins as well]. Usually I save the file, close it and bring it back in, but when I did that just now the new layer was still blank (although I know the edits are there!). Here is a screen shot:

Pat,
I have Elements 2021 (with the latest update -- 2021.3) installed on two computers; I haven't encountered this problem. So, I'm taking a very long shot in the dark.
Try this "trick". It seems to fix many glitches Elements develops.
1. Right-click on the desktop shortcut and select "Run as administrator". 2. Test the waters. 3. If everything is working fine, close Elements. 4. Open Elements again but this time do it from your standard user account.

Out of interest, did you run the plug in on the original "Background" layer or on a duplicate layer? Some filters will only work properly on a duplicate layer. The other possibility is that sometimes Elements will do weird things when it is low on RAM. That's why saving, closing and reopening sometimes works.
Kind regards Chris

Thanks. It was on a duplicate layer; having said that, there are times when my computer appears to be busily doing stuff on its own, so perhaps the memory was low. I tried Sepiana's suggestion and opened Elements as an administrator and had no issues whatsoever.

I tried Sepiana's suggestion and opened Elements as an administrator and had no issues whatsoever. Pat, glad to hear it worked. This little "trick" fixes many problems due to Elements' misbehaving. Elements seems to be quite finicky about permission levels. there are times when my computer appears to be busily doing stuff on its own, so perhaps the memory was low.
You can increase the amount of RAM allocated to Elements as well as make other adjustments to improve its performance. When Elements Goes into a Sluggish Mode

Sepiana, this is what appears in my Editor-Performance-Scratch Disks: (I think g:\ is a 'My Passport' storage unit I am accessing. I don't usually have it hooked up.) I am not sure what changes I should make?

Thanks Sepiana. I did adjust my performance to 75% and I noticed a difference in speed and processing. My plug-in filters worked much faster; however, after a long period of time the layers started going blank again. I will up the performance to 80% and see what happens. I can always use administrator mode all the time (as a last resort).

srmoment, This is odd! The "Run as administrator" fix should stick. It looks like something else is going on. The way I understand it, . . . you use a plug-in, the effect is applied, but the layer stack displays a blank layer. I have two questions: - Is the use of the plug-in recorded in the History panel? - Have you tried applying the same plug-in again (Ctrl-F) when this happens? Before saving and closing the file?
