Hi,
I had been editing a sequence of bird shots taken some time ago. Everything was proceeding to plan when suddenly one of my NEF images imported in corrupt form. I rebooted and tried again but same result.
I then opened the same file in FastStone with no problem. The problem seems confined to opening in the ACR processor.
I attach the file and a screen shot of the apparently corrupt file. It is not a great image but I would like to understand why it happened. Any ideas. ( see attached files )

Hi popcorn,
Let's get the ball running, . . .
- Which version of Elements are you using? - Which ACR update is installed?

Popcorn, its hard to say, this could be caused by several things.
1- Corruption in the camera due to memory (buffer) issues or a faulty sd card. 2- Corruption while being imported to your computer. 3- Corruption on the computer hard drive over time due to damaged sectors. 4- PSE can't properly read the corrupted data. 5- The file is good, but PS Elements has misread the data while importing to ACR.
I wonder if Faststone is reading the actual RAW format or the jpg embedded in the raw file. Using Faststone or Nikon's own raw software, can you export the raw file to another format like tiff?
There is the possibility (5) that PS Elements may have written some corrupt data during the import.
As a test, copy the raw file to another location and change the file name by adding a dash or underscore. Then, see if PS Elements will be able to import it correctly.
Kind regards Chris

Hi Popcorn,
One thing that sticks out is that the image show an iso of 110 - I have never seen ISO 110.
I would download the adobe DNG converter to change the NEF file to a DNG or download the NX Studio from Nikon and try to open it. From dealing with a corrupted file in that past that's what they look like.
I think it may be a good idea to get all the images off that card and reformat it in the camera a few times.

Thank you Chris & fotofrank Chris I have tried renaming but still no go!
It can't be opened except in FastStone where it opens as a perfectly normal .NEF file.
Frank I will definitely reform the card a few times, maybe in my D500 instead of the D7000. I have never been able to convert from Raw directly to another format, always did it by opening the file in the Elditor and converting the NEF to a .psd and then to jpg or TIF. I have NX on my computer, but will try and download the Adobe converter, I did not know it existed.
Thank you again.

It will be interesting to see if Adobe DNG converter or Nikon NX can salvage the raw file. I do wonder if Faststone, as a viewer. is just reading the embedded jpg within the raw file.
Kind regards Chris

Hi I downloaded the Adobe DNG Converter. When set the origin as a folder containing NEF image files it returns the I get "the selected folder does not contain any supported Raw files" Tried it with a few folders containing NEF files from my D500. Same message!

Hi Popcorn, The DNG converter works for me. Just to level set - you are selecting the actual folder or clicking on include images in subfolders Correct? What are you files named if you don't mind telling.

Hi Frank To do the teat I used the files I intended to delete from a recent birding trip. The names were -DSC4029.NEF their exif was 4928 x 3264 =16.06MP,17 783Kb ) [1/35] 28%, There were 35 images all having the same gformat but with different -DSC numbering. I tried "Convert" and I tried "Extract" fpr good measure. I am not sure what it Extracts and could get no information from the Web.

Just to be sure - You are selecting the folder where the files actually exist, correct? You can also click the include images contained in subfolders.
