This post is a combination of photo techniques and editing software. I chose to put it in Photography and Techniques as the main subject is photo technique ... supported with special software. There is a thread here about taking and creating panoramas. MS ICE software is discussed and it was noted that ICE will make grid photos as well. Today, I was at the ponds across the road walking with my 200 to 600-mm bird lens but wanted a photo of the yellow poplars and reflections. So I set the focal length to 200 and took 33 photos in more or less a grid pattern. The were opened in ACR, adjusted and then resized to 1500 pixels wide in PSE. The 33 resized images were opened in ICE and it stitch them very well. I don't plan to do anything with this as it's not particularly good, but it shows what can be done when you only have a tele lens and want a wide-angle scenic shot. It is also a good demo of how well ICE works. A screenshot of the 33 resized images

Impressive !
The missing information/black areas in the stitched example, is that just the nature of the beast or did you not include those areas in initial capture ?
I like the bit about downsizing the pieces before putting them together; whenever I create something like that, it gets huge quick....and slows things down considerably.
Tripod or handheld ?

Yes, I was handholding and although I tried to create a fairly uniform set of left-to-right and up-and-down shots, I was not too accurate. ICE attempts to stitch all images together and missing zones are black. Yes, image size has to be reduced UNLESS wanting to make a large print. At a grid of 5 by 4 images and ~ 30% image overlap the result could some something like 400 MB image .. or larger. Would have to toss another lump of coal into the computer to keep it running.

Pretty good for handheld; at least you didn't leave a big hole in the middle. Keeping track and allowing overlay in both horizontal and vertical directions is tough even with a tripod.
