I normally carry a monopod with me when hiking. The camera is always in position and saves the arms and shoulders and means less movement when taking photos. I recently acquired myself a monopod, a Slik E-Z Pod that has a tilting top and a spring-loaded fine-adjustment trigger. .....Now that I think about it, I actually have three more monopods; two are removable legs of ball-head equipped tripods; and, another is a removable leg of my amazing Leitz Tilt-All of which I have not as yet ever been able to get the leg to unscrew, probably from 75-years of galvanic corrosion from not being unscrewed --- I am not going to force the issue. Every camera on the place is equipped with Arca-Swiss plates. The Slik has a removable plate specific to it, to which I have added an Arca-Swiss Qwik-Release clamp. I figure to use the monopod with a Canon 7D and tripod-foot equipped Sigma 50-500mm. Do I need some sort of head between the lens and the monopod; or, will the tilting top be enough ? I figure the monopod itself would be the pivot. What do you, or any of you guys use ?

Here is the Slik E-Z Pod like I have (not to be confused with the E-Z Pod Jr. which is much lighter and lacks the spring-loaded adjustment) The one I have is all black; no red or orange parts - thank goodness... Roberts Camerabhphotovideo

BuckSkinI use a 31-year-old Slik AF-2100 Pistol Grip Head (Quick Release).. HereIt mounts on Manfrotto monopod although any monopod (without head) would work. I tried a Manfrotto pistol ball head and it was horrible...waste of money. After a year or so it would not hold a camera and large lens. I need the quick movement action of the pistol grip with no fiddling with knobs. The best part of this head is that its grip firm and will not tip (creep down) even with a 600-mm lens attached to the camera. The Manfrotto would not hold a camera without creeping down under the weight of a camera and any size of telephoto.

Thanks; I like Slik stuff; I have their big tripod and the pan head that came with it.
Thanks for the recommendation of the pistol-grip head; they must be well thought of as, in the past, I tried two different times to buy that same head on EBay, but they quickly got bid up beyond my budget.
