and merge them into one photo for a sharper looking image? I had a friend suggest that would be possible.

Elements+ has a focus stacking script. I've not used it.

Charles, Are you talking about Focus Stacking ? If so, . . . A possible way to do it in Elements would be to use Photomerge Group Shot. This feature used to be in Expert Edit > Enhance > . . . Starting with PSE 14, it's located in Guided Edit. Focus stacking for Depth & Clarity, PET magazine, v12, n6, Aug 2015, p16If I remember it correctly, you have Elements+, an add-on created by one our members -- Andrei Doubrovski . It offers a Focus Stacking script. Andrei is best qualified to elaborate on this; I'm sending him a PM bringing this thread to his attention.

Thank you Sepiana, I GUESS I am talking about Focus Stacking ... a way to take several pictures for stacking together to make a better focused image from several pictures. Thank you for sending Andrei a message in my behalf!

and merge them into one photo for a sharper looking image? I had a friend suggest that would be possible. Yes, the previous responses correctly identified focus stacking as an option. Elements+ also has a script named noise stacking which can reduce noise withouy blurring details since most noise is random.

Charles, Please watch this video on the Focus Stacking: youtu.be/NgoUF1DA_T4Perhaps, it's what you are looking for. Andrei, What I am trying to do is make my Moon pictures more in focus. For the moon I do not know that I can change the focus on the moon different from 3 different images like you show in you video. Here is what I typically get with one image: Note> Click on the image here then click again on the image when at Flicker to enlarge the image and you can scroll around IMG_2863 Moon 09-07-2022 by inspeqtor, on Flickr

Somedays depending on the atmospheric weather I do not get the pictures as good as this one I got last month.

Unless you have multiple images with different parts of the moon in focus - focus stacking will not make the final image look sharper.

I wonder if your friend was thinking about image averaging?
To average several images, load all the individual photos as layers. Keep the bottom layer at 100% opacity. Reduce the layer above it to 1/2 opacity (50%). Go to 1/3 (33%) opacity for the next layer up. Then 1/4 (25%), 1/5 (20%), 1/6 (17%), and so on.
Anyway, it is easy to do and maybe the results will be more pleasing than any one of the originals.

Unless you have multiple images with different parts of the moon in focus - focus stacking will not make the final image look sharper. The video that Andrei used he had some dew drops/rain drops on a string or something similar so he was able to get within inches of the dew drops. With the moon being 238,000+ miles from the earth that is going to be impossible to do with the moon so I am guessing his technique will not work at all

Charles, in the video, each of 3 images is focused on a different area. Outside of the focus area, the images are blurred. "Focus Stacking" combines the 3 focused areas in a single image.
If your initial Moon shots are identical, the combined image won't be any sharper.

Thank you Andrei, and that is what I figured would happen. No problem.

Tom, I will ask him about this. Thank you for thinking of this!
