I use the overlay to center images, and sometimes the color and/or content of the image makes it almost impossible to see the grid.
Is there a way to make the Crop Tool Grid Overlay darker?
If there is, perhaps I can also darken the Spot Healing Brush Tool cursor, with which I have the same problem. I'll wait before starting a new topic about that.
Thank you.

Peter, I use PS but I think the crop tool and preferences are pretty much the same in both PS and PE. I have been trying to replicate your issue with the crop tool. If I try to crop on a black image or on a white image the crop tool seems to adjust. I am wondering if your problem might be with the grid overlay.....you can change that color in your preferences.

The answer to both questions is no. As Helen stated using the Crop Tool Grid overlay on a dark image, it shows up White. On a lighter image it shows up dark. You change the color of the Grid in preferences, however that will not change the crop tool. You can take the issue up with Adobe if needed. You may want to post a screen shot of your issue and the version of elements that you are using.

fotofrank, that's not the answer I was hoping for but thanks for letting me know. I think in hmca's example, above, the Crop Tool Grid Overlay just stayed gray, which makes it show up over both black and white images. My issue would be demonstrated with the gray grid over a gray background. Thank you both, Peter

I had tried the crop on grey as well..... It might help if you shared a screenshot as Frank suggested, Peter. I'm off for the night but I'm sure that someone else will help you with this. Will check back in the morning.

hmca , here is an example. I typically count the squares on each side of the image I'm centering, and as you can see it can be difficult to see them. Or look at the foot in the upper-right. It's very hard to see how close it comes to the grid line to its right. It would be better if I could turn them black, but I understood Frank to say that while you can do that with the View > Grid, you can't do it with the Crop Tool Grid Overlay. So he suggested I make the suggestion to Adobe. Thank you, Peter

I've had same issue with this, so I find using a new colour filled layer that best shows grid lines and with black pencil draw my own lines on 2nd blank layer, then reduce the opacity on the coloured layer to reveal your image.

How about using the grid and then setting your crop using the grid as your guide. Grid colors can be changed. I know this is cumbersome and you’d probably not bother with every crop, but in desperation with a difficult crop, it might be an option ______________________________________ Another suggestion- how about making a solid layer in your exact finished size and clip your photo to it. I find clipping so useful because after you clip your photo to your solid layer, you can use the move tool on the photo layer and move it, resize it, etc., until you get precisely the part of your photo you wish to save. Then you merge down and in essence, your photo is cropped. photo:personal

Seems to me the main issue here is one of visibility - visibility of the grids or overlays - something I have problems with myself. But I have resigned myself to the fact that nothing will be done about it.
When I ran PSE version 11 the transform box in that version was very visible but that all changed in following versions and on a busy scrapbook page it can be almost impossible to see the transform box. I saw quite a few complaints about that at the time but it seems to me that Adobe have obviously chosen to ignore this problem or don’t see it as a problem so I don’t hold out much hope that they would do much about this now.

Good morning, Peter. It is good to see that you have already received some new suggestions as to how to deal with your issue. I am now wondering if you just posted your image without any overlays, and stated what you want to achieve, members could then share what steps they would take for the desired outcome. Please know that this is a patient group and we will work with you to come up with the solution that works best for you.
Just want to add that my thought had been the same as Janice, to use the grid and crop from there, however if the clipping mask option works for you that is very flexible.

Looking at your example it brings on question to mind - why not photograph with the object on a plain white or black background to start with. You can change the grid shield color to whatever color you want - from your image, it looks like yours is set to gray. This may help the cropping. You can click on the ruler and drag out a guideline and place it where you want. You can repeat this process as many times as need either vertical or horizontal and yes you change the color of the guidelines. Hope this helps.

fotofrank, I do use a white background when I take the photos. Are you saying to use the View > Grid instead of the Crop Tool Grid Overlay grid to center? If you are, I understand the reason is the then I can change the color of the grid. However, if you look at this example, note that the top and bottom rows are not equal in size. The View > Grid feature doesn't center the grid. Or are you saying I can correct this by clicking on the grid lines? Clicking on them isn't working for me. Also, where can I read about the Shield. It's new to me and as you can see I don't know how to use it. Thanks!

No - If you click on the ruler you can drag out a guide line. That guide line can have its color changed. Once you have your guides in place you can crop to that size.

The crop shield shows you what is not part of the crop - it has no other function.

I have not heard of the Crop Tool Shield either! Here is what I found in the Help:
Note: You can change the color and opacity of the crop shield (the cropped area surrounding the image) by changing the Crop tool preferences. Choose Edit > Preferences > Display & Cursors and specify a new Color and Opacity value in the Crop Tool area of the Preferences dialog box. In case you don’t want to see a colored shield while cropping, deselect Use Shield.
EDIT: I see that Frank already answered this while I was composing this post!
